Old Grand-Dad Bottled In Bond 1949 is an experience. It’s something that was made at a distillery that no longer exists by a company that has also ceased to exist. It’s an echo of bourbon’s past and that brings with it a certain level of respect when consuming it. Despite the fact that it wasn’t a killer bourbon experience there’s still something grin-inducing about drinking a whiskey that’s been on this planet 2x longer than I have.

I’m really enjoying this, it’s much better than the Red Winter Wheat version that also came out. The darkly sweet and spicy nose, warm sweet and spicy palate and sweet woody finish all wrapped up in a nutty package is really tasty. That said, I still can’t really say it’s worth the price. At $45 it’s over priced by about $15 in my opinion. But it would serve as a nice little treat if you’re looking for something a little bit different and not being too picky about the price.

Orphan Barrel Gifted Horse is a 4 year old blend of straight whiskies that Diageo first tried to spiffy up via misdirection by only stating that it was 39% KSBW. After a barrage of angry posts, tweets, emails, etc. they released the actual mix which worked in their favor because until they did I was sure it was at least 51% corn whiskey. It’s actually 51% 4 yr MGP bourbon, but that original omission is not only disingenuous, but comes across as a tactically planned deception.

Finest Irish Single Malt 22 Years is a great whiskey. It has a rich, dense, sweet and dark character from the ex-Sherry casks that pairs well with the fruity malt; then comes the peat. This whiskey has just just enough smoky peat to make you take notice, but in no way does it overpower. Instead it balances against the sweet and dark notes fantastically. It’s the kind of dynamic Irish whiskey I’ve been looking for.

Do I really need to convince you that this 1952 Weller Reserve is obscenely good? Rich, dense, heavy and full of the velvety heavy bourbon character we look for and crave this was the holy grail of well preserved whiskey. It was an awesome experience to sit and sniff and sip through layers of oak, dark fruit, spice, vanilla and dark sweets that were unleashed after sitting in a bottle for 64 years.

Corsair Quinoa Whiskey is a tasty little gem from Tennessee and over the years I’ve grown to like it more and more. Could be my perception or it could be that their batches are getting better and batter. All I know is that it has a great rustic quality to it that starts in the nose and runs down through the finish and I’m enjoying this batch 27.

This High West Double Rye Barrel Select was picked by/for Reddit, received an additional 19 months of aging in an ex-Campfire cask and doesn’t contain any smoke. It does however have a beautifully rich character that supersedes any of the recent batches of Double Rye I’ve had. It reminds me more of the older, single and double digit, batches of HWDR I drank while living in Utah. The additional time spent marrying and maturing in a used barrel made it a bit richer all around.
