Virgil in the Basket -- the popular late medieval Legend of Virgil told of his infatuation with the Emperor's daughter. She tured of him and when he climbed into a basket to be hauled up to her room for a secret nighttime assignation, she left him stranded half way up for all the citizens of Rome to laugh at in the morning. A uniface plaquette of this subject in the NGA's Kress collection is regarded as a 'cap-badge', so perhaps this which I found in a recent numismatic sale -- COMMENT
