Wheel Lock Pistol. 1600-25, Germany. Ebony inlaid with mother of pearl and carved stag horn. Wheel lock mechanisms in guns were extremely expensive in the past. They operated by a piece of flint held by a clamp next to a protruding piece of wheel. When the trigger was pulled, the wheel revolved rapidly striking against the flint. Sparks ignited the gunpowder and the gun went off. This example is decorated lavishly with scenes of the hunt and animals being chased.
