Black leaves are the perfect foil for tropical colors, such as orange, yellow and magenta. Chartreuse flowers and foliage are particularly spectacular when combined with black. Dark leaves also pair well with pale flowers, such as lemon, cream, apricot and lavender. They don't do as well with white flowers or with primary red or blue. Orange-red works better than blue-red.
