This photograph shows a German Einsatzgruppe firing squad shooting Jews in an open pit near Dubossary (now Moldova) in September 1941. When the Germans invaded the Soviet Union in June 1941, these killing squads rounded up and shot Jewish men, women and children; communist officials; and others considered racially and ideologically dangerous. Surviving Jews were then forced into ghettos.

German soldiers from an Einsatzgruppen (Mobile Death Squad) torment a Jew who was caught in prayer. Men from these squads were infamous for their psychopathic brutality and willingness to engage in mass murder without qualm or conscience. Once in the clutches of an Einsatzgruppen, a quick death was for the fortunate. Humiliation, degradation, and torture before death was the most common fate.
