James Webb Space Telescope Gains 'Golden Eye'

The round, gold coated secondary mirror that will fly aboard NASA's James Webb Space Telescope looks like a giant sun in this photo where technicians at NASA we're securing it to a platform.

43,000 Galaxies on a Map / the most complete map of our local universe to date. It took more than ten years to create, has 43,000 galaxies and extends out 380 million light years from the Earth. The 3D coordinates of each galaxy were recorded so the raw data could potentially be used to build a realistic 3D model of the universe.

A spectacular Hubble Space Telescope image reveals the heart of the Lagoon Nebula. Seen as a massive cloud of glowing dust and gas, bombarded by the energetic radiation of new stars, this placid name hides a dramatic reality. The Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) on the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope has captured a dramatic view of gas and dust sculpted by intense radiation from hot young stars deep in the heart of the Lagoon Nebula (Messier 8).

What's so special about this photo of the Moon? It was taken by John W. Draper in 1839. If you guessed that it's the first photograph ever taken of the Moon, you are absolutely correct. Originally from England, Draper was a chemistry professor at New York University during the 1800s. This silver platinum plate of the moon was the first of a series that he shot with the assistance of a telescope. He later presented these photos to the Science Academy.

On July 4, scientists working with data from ongoing experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) announced the discovery of a new particle "consistent with" the Higgs boson. After years of design and construction, the LHC first sent protons around its 27 kilometer underground tunnel in 2008. 4 years later, the LHC's role in the discovery of the Higgs boson provides a final missing piece for the Standard Model of Particle Physics.
