Sunday Silence, ridden by Patrick Valenzuela, won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, both times over Easy Goer, ridden by Pat Day. Easy Goer won the Belmont, Travers, Whitney, Woodward and Jockey Club Gold Cup. At Breeders' Cup Classic at Gulfstream Park, Sunday Silence, rode by Chris McCarron because Pat was on cocaine suspension, beat Easy Goer by a neck to win Horse of Year.
