The museum’s collection is housed in the elegant home built for William Scarbrough and designed by architect William Jay from England. It remains one of the earliest examples of Greek Revival architecture in the South. The mansion was abandoned for twenty years, and the Historic Savannah Foundation restored the house in the 1970s. After a second period of neglect, Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum restored the house again in 1996-97.
