Born October 22, 1882, Newell Convers Wyeth was raised on a farm, then studied illustration under Howard Pyle. Many of his most popular drawings depicted the American West, or appeared in more than 100 classic children's books, such as Treasure Island, Kidnapped, and Robin Hood. As a muralist, Wyeth decorated numerous public buildings. His son was the great American painter Andrew Wyeth.
