One of the earliest Indian texts on perfumery in the pre moderm period was Varahamihira's "Brhatsamhita" or "The Great Compendium". Ingredients for perfume recipes are described as placed in a grid that could produce numerous different combinations of aromas that could be applied as a perfume. Varahamihira also came up with an algorithm to work out how many perfumes could be made from a defined number of ingredients, in one case producing over 40,000 potential perfumes.
