Arancine are one of the most traditional foods in all of Sicily. These fried rice balls resemble oranges - the Italian word for orange is arancia. They can be stuffed with a variety of mixtures, but a meat sauce, or ragu, is the most traditional. In Sicily, they are sold everywhere and we loved to see them sold on the street by vendors, in the airport or even gas stations.

Margherita Pizza at Pizzeria Brandi, Via Chiaia, Naples ~ Pizzeria Brandi was opened in the 19th century, and founder Raffaele Esposito invented the Margherita pizza (made with tomato, basil, olive oil, and fresh mozzarella - the colors of the newly-united Italy's flag) in 1889 when asked to prepare a banquet for Margherita di Savoia, the queen of Italy. The dollop in the middle is mozzarella di bufala (buffalo mozzarella). It was most delicious.
