This is one of a small group of pre-historic carved conus shells from the Massim and Collingwood Bay region known to exist. Harry Beran, the Massim art scholar, notes that 24 such shells have been located in public and private collections. They know of two others but do not have photographs of them. "Approximately half were found in middens in Collingwood Bay, Oro Province, around 1900 and the others have been found more recently in the ground in various locations in the Massim region.
