The Jolly Roger of Stede Bonnet, the Gentleman Pirate. The people of Barbados were surprised that Stede Bonnet, an army Major, turned pirate. An unusual pirate, in 1717, instead of stealing a ship, Stede purchased the Revenge. He also paid his men out of his own money. Later on in life, Stede gave himself up to the people of North Carolina. But he returned to piracy, and William Rhett captured him in 1718 near Charlestown, South Carolina. He was hung by the neck.
