Is your nervous system healing? 12 affirming signs
If you've been on a dedicated path of self-development, you might find yourself wondering: what are the signs that your nervous system is healing? Not long ago, I found myself in the E.R. needing stitches after a traumatic event. With my understanding of trauma and PTSD, I allowed myself to fully experience the moment—I cried, shook, and trembled as I was being treated. I didn’t suppress my body's natural responses. Instead, I clung to the nurse’s hand, fully receiving her nurturing presence, while letting my body process and release as much as possible in real time. I did this because I’ve learned that allowing my body to move through traumatic experiences—rather than resisting—naturally supports regulation and helps prevent dysregulated responses later on. But I wasn’t always this way.
Dysregulated Nervous System: Top 9 Signs & How to Heal

The ANS consists of two branches, the sympathetic and parasympathetic, that work together to maintain equilibrium and respond to internal and external stimuli. The sympathetic nervous system is responsible for activating the body’s “fight-or-flight” response in situations of perceive
Signs of a Dysregulated Nervous System
If these symptoms sound familiar, it might be time to explore what’s going on inside your body. The nervous system plays a crucial role in our survival, constantly monitoring our environment and preparing our bodies to respond to threats or relax when we’re safe. Our parasympathetic nervous system will allow us to rest and digest. Our sympathetic nervous system will help us if we need to fight or flight.

It’s not defiance or drama — it’s a nervous system overwhelmed by too much input, too fast. Children’s brains are still wiring. Their nervous systems are learning how to feel big emotions and return to safety. When they feel stressed, scared, or overstimulated, their bodies enter a survival state — fight, flight, or freeze. That’s why co-regulation is so powerful. When I do the Butterfly Hug with my son on my lap, I’m helping his nervous system borrow mine — showing his body it’s safe to come down, breathe, and be held. Here’s how it works: The Butterfly Hug uses bilateral stimulation — alternating taps on the left and right sides of the body — which activates both hemispheres of the brain. This rhythmic movement sends signals to the amygdala, the brain’s alarm system, letting it know: you’re safe now. It gently interrupts the fight-or-flight loop and supports emotional integration. Touch, rhythm, and presence are cues of safety. This moment might look simple, but it’s deep somatic support. Because regulation isn’t taught with words. It’s felt. And when kids feel safe in their bodies, they grow up knowing how to come home to themselves. Tools like the butterfly hug help build: 🌿 Emotional resilience 🌿 Vagus nerve tone 🌿 Nervous system flexibility 🌿 Secure attachment Support the body first — the behaviour follows. By helping our children feel safe in their bodies we are giving them to tools and resources to navigate life and everything it will throw at them. When you’re pushed outside of your comfort zone your nervous system can learn to function more effectively under stress, provided it gets to fully recover from the stress activation.
