On 21 October 1797 United States Frigate Constitution was launched at the Hartts Boston shipyard, Boston, Massachusetts. Constitution is now the oldest commissioned ship in the U.S. Navy. This painting by Anton Otto Fischer, depicts Constitution’s boats towing her in a calm, while she was being pursued by a squadron of British warships early in the War of 1812, on 18 July 1812.

On a quiet evening, “HMS Surprise” lies at anchor in Grand Harbour, Malta, a Marine standing guard on deck. A cutter pulls away from the dock the officers in the stern softly lit by a lantern. In the background on the right can be seen a British 74-gun warship and a Genoese barque is being towed across the harbour. Geoff Hunt
