A study of a spray of oak-leaves with a cluster of acorns. To the left is a drawing of a spray of Dyers greenweed showing a flower and pods.A number of Leonardo’s botanical drawings are executed in an unusual technique of red chalk on paper with an orange-red coating. In this remarkably bold study of a sprig of oak, the dense shading gives the drawing a great sense of solidity and life.

Leonardo da Vinci Inventions "Leonardo believed he was destined to fly. He was fascinated by birds, and spent many hours watching and drawing them, to understand how they stayed in the air. From his pages of notes, we know he had developed a good understanding of aerodynamics. During his lifetime, Leonardo sketched many flying machine ideas. To the best of our knowledge, he never built or tested any of them. Which is probably a good thing, as not all of them would have worked." - BBC
