A photo from 1972 by Luigi Ghirri, who was one of my favorite discoveries in the ILLUMInations show here in Venice. (I somehow missed the New York retrospective he seems to have had not too long ago.) Ghirri does a kind of color version of Lee Friedlander, but with a stronger conceptual and surrealist edge that points to the European context for his art - note the lovely ironing-board rhyme of Pegasus to old man to dog - the word “miscela” on the pump means “blend” or “mixture”, by the way.
