The Avocet The avocet is a pied, or black and white, wader with an upcurved bill. They sweep their bill from side to side in an action called scything in order to capture invertebrates. They also eat crustaceans, molluscs, small fish and plant material. Avocets can be found breeding on the east coast of Norfolk at Titchwell Marsh. A length of 42-45 cm and a wingspan of 72-80cm. Weigh 260-290 gms, with long legs so they can feed in the shallow water. Other habitats are marshes and estuaries. Nesting. Avocets nest in scrapes on small islands; the female lays 3-4 eggs, which are incubated for about 23 days. The chicks are very vulnerable to predators, such as black-backed gulls, herring gulls, and herons, as soon as they are hatched. Although the parents will sit on them for protection,

Haematopus ostralegus, Oystercatcher
Haematopus ostralegus, Oystercatcher, breeding in western Europe, central Eurosiberia, Kamchatka, China. Common, conspicuous, and often noisy large wader of varied coastal habitats, especially beaches and mudflats; also nearby fields and locally inland. Winter flocks number locally in hundreds. Probes in mud and uses its bill to pry open shellfish, mainly mussels and cockles. Despite its name, oysters do not form a large part of its diet. The call is a distinctive loud piping.
