Born in 1715, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck, Duchess of Portland had the largest natural history collection in the country, complete with its own curator. Her collection contained costly art objects including the priceless Portland Vase. Although most of the collection was sold upon her death, large portions were sold intact and can still be seen today. She was a member of the Bluestockings, a group of intellectual women aristocrats.
