A beautiful Hubble Space Telescope image of the Veil Nebula, a supernova remnant formed roughly 10 000 years ago. The Veil Nebula’s progenitor star, which was 20 times the mass of the Sun, lived fast and died young, ending its life in a cataclysmic release of energy. Despite this stellar violence, the shockwaves and debris from the supernova sculpted the Veil Nebula’s delicate tracery of ionised gas, creating a scene of astronomical beauty. The Eastern Veil Nebula (NGC 6992) is one of my favorite deep sky astrophotography targets. My advice on capturing the Veil with your camera and telescope:

NGC 6960 is sometimes known as the Veil Nebula, sometimes as the Witches Broom, and sometimes as the Cirrus Nebula. This region is part of the Cygnus Loop

NGC 6992 is the eastern region of the Veil Nebula, a supernova remnant in the constellation of cygnus. Recent measurements put the supernova remnant at arround 2400 light-years distant. I took my first photo of the Veil Nebula in the summer of 2011. It was out-of-focus, dim, and poorly framed. BUT, for the first time, I could actually see glowing areas of the nebula in my image. This was one of many incredible astrophotography experiences I have had that made me realize I was in this for life. My latest image of the Eastern Veil Nebula includes over 10 years of patience, practice, and passion.

My bi-color edit of the Western Veil Nebula, a supernova remnant packed with H-alpha and Oiii. This has been a fun project, a very difficult one to capture in narrowband, maybe someday I'll add RGB stars to the scene to give it a bit more pop. I'm happy with the detail I was able to extract given the relatively short integration time, both H-alpha and Oiii managed quite a bit of signal.
