Born 50 years apart, they are the most famous male ballet dancers of the 20th century. They trained at the same ballet school in St Petersburg and both caused a sensation when they appeared in the west. Each stood for something larger than themselves: Nijinsky for pre-Revolutionary Russian exoticism and Nureyev for Soviet bravura at the height of the Cold War.
