Painted in 1924 at Juan-les-Pins on the French Rivera, this composition belongs to a series of large, synthetic cubist still lifes created by Pablo Picasso in the mid-1920s. It’s cheerful, lively colours and playful forms reflect a relatively tranquil time in the artist’s personal life-between the birth of his first son, Paolo (1921), and before his marriage with Olga began to deteriorate. This spring, works by the greats of impressionism, such as Manet, Degas, Renoir, Monet, Cézanne, Gaugin and Van Gogh, have been gathered in the Musée Maillol in Paris.
