The ANS is a motor nervous system that controls glands, cardiac, and smooth muscle. It is autonomically controlled and it regulates processes that maintain homeostasis (image). The two divisions of the ANS are the sympathetic (excitement, enthusiasm, energy, exercise, high sense of awareness and high metabolic demand) and parasympathetic (digestive, defecation, resting division). The divisions work in a teeter-totter fashion to maintain homeostasis. (Google Image).
