The Morgan Library and Museum

Originally built as legendary banking tycoon J.P. Morgan's private library, it houses a preeminent collection of rare books, artwork, and illuminated manuscripts, such as three copies of the Gutenberg Bible, the first book ever to be printed on a movable type press in 1455. In addition to ongoing exhibitions of medieval and Renaissance artwork, contemporary artists like Matthew Barney have also shown their oeuvre in this majestic turn-of-the-century space.

The interior of J. Pierpont Morgan’s Library consists of three rooms radiating off the east, north, and west sides of the Rotunda, a vaulted entrance foyer. The largest of the three served as Morgan's library, the room to the west was Morgan's private study, and the smallest of the three, to the north, was an office for Pierpont Morgan's librarian, Belle da Costa Greene (1879–1950). In the Library, the walls, reaching to a height of thirty feet, are lined floor to ceiling with triple tiers of bookcases fashioned of Mead, Financier, Entrance, Morgan Library, Entrance Foyer, The Firm, The Morgan, Floor To Ceiling, Beautiful Buildings
