The second nerve division or V2 from the sensory root of the trigeminal nerve is the maxillary nerve, which is set between the other two divisions both in size and location. The afferent nerve branches of the maxillary nerve carry sensory information for the maxillae and its overlying skin, oral mucosa, maxillary sinuses, nasal cavity, palate, nasopharynx, and part of the dura mater.

The PSA nerve serves as an afferent nerve for the mucous membranes of the maxillary sinus and the maxillary molars with the associated buccal periodontium and gingiva in most cases unless the MSA nerve is present. These are the external branches that provide afferent innervation for the maxillary molars. The PSA nerve, like the ASA and MSA nerves, is part of the superior dental plexus within the maxillary arch.
