Ida Lvovna Rubinstein (1883–1960) was a Russian dancer, actress and art patron. She performed with Diaghilev's Ballets Russes in 1909-1911 then quit to form her own company. Boléro by Ravel (1928) was among her commissions. She is not considered to be in the top tier of ballerinas as she began her training too late. She had great stage presence and was able to act. With her inherited wealth she commissioned works that suited her abilities, works that mixed dance with drama and stagecraft.
