a quilted bedspread on a bed with wood flooring and wall in the background

On Saturday, The Husband and I got out early to be among the first ones at the Big Flea Market at the Expo Center here in Fredericksburg. This show has 300 dealers (according to the advertisement) with a great assortment of things to see. Even though our house is full and we have just about everything we want, we still go to shows like this to look and learn and see what prices things are bringing these days. Every once in a while, I find something that I have to have. As we were going…

Hi Everyone! As you probably know, I'm still selling feedsacks and rickrack like a mad woman! And I remembered that I'd talk to you a bit about caring for feedsacks, so here I go! First of all, if you ever find feedsacks that are "perfect", it'll be few and far between. I seldom find one that doesn't have at least some staining and a few peck or pull holes. What are those you say? Remember that many of these sacks were taken to the coop or the barn and possibly thrown on the floor where the…

an old quilt with many different colors and patterns

I have been collecting feedsacks for a long time - at antique malls, antique fairs, and ebay. Now to use them... and make a quilt that looks vintage, not too 'pretty'. But of course don't we collect the pretty fabric? So I had a bunch of 3 inch squares left over from a previous project. A simple design, using them up, and vintage fabric for the border. And another feedsack (from ebay) for the back. A bright orange yellow flower pattern. And you can see some of the feedsack fabric I used…

Here's a page from a 1933 Sears and Roebuck catalog showing different types of fabrics that were available for a few cents per yard. My favorite pieces are the fabric in the upper left hand corner of the page. This second advertisement is for Silk Bubble Crepe fabrics from a 1934 catalog. It is a really nice representation of the colors of silk bubble crepe that were available. Crepe was all the rage for dress fabric during this time.

Today I made this little baby quilt, using Windham's Story Book fabrics and Wee Play for the backing. These fabrics reminds me of my great grandma's dresses, just gorgeous! a pink quilt with many different colored stars on the top and bottom, along with several smaller ones

One of the iconic uses of feedsacks is the making of quilts used on beds. A bed quilt is basically made up of three or more layers of cloth. The top layer, which is usually decorative, consists of a large piece of cloth that may be made of a single piece of plain cloth or multi-coloured patchwork pieces sewn together and/or designs sewn down (appliqué) onto a plain ground material. There then comes the layer of wadding (batting) for warmth, and finally, the lining or backing layer. The three…
