EARLY RENAISSANCE, Brunelleschi; section of Santa Maria del Fiore. # To make the construction design of the dome more difficult, a drum had been built with large round windows in the sides. That means, lateral thrusts could not be brought to the ground through side vaults,as at the Hagia Sophia. It would have been impossible to build a wooden framework strong enough to support such a dome during construction, which was why the dome was not built by 1418.#
