Other consonants (nasal stops or non-continuants🚫) can be a little more tricky for emergent readers to blend as they have an obstruction of the airway which means they essentially ‘stop’ as they’re making the sound 👄 Try it out yourself! Follow @farmerlovesphonics for early literacy tips & tricks that promote fluent reading! 🎉 Typical Blending: Segmenting to blend. Not the best option for beginning or struggling readers. Continuous Blending: No stopping between sounds. Stretch and blend slowly. Hard to do if sounds are not automatic. Successive Blending: Sound by sound…blend to the vowel first and then to the end. Cover up and reveal one sound at a time if the reader likes to guess! This is great for readers that omit or substitute sounds. Good for low working memory as well. Perfect for beginners that are not as automatic with their sounds.
