One of the greatest kings of the Persian Empire, Darius the Great began construction on his palace in his new capital, Persepolis in 515 BC. The Apadana, whose facade is shown here, served as the royal Throne Hall where ambassadors of the twenty provinces of the empire came to present taxes and gifts on Norooz, the Persian New Year on March 21st.
