an orange and blue painting of a rhino

Let me start out by saying this has been one of the most successful and visually stunning projects that I've ever done with my students. It is definitely the most exciting printmaking project that we've ever done at Thomas. I wrote the lesson and went into the project thinking that it would probably be pretty good. I told my students that I'm absolutely blown away by the results of their talent and hard work. This lesson is a keeper. My previous 4th grade printmaking lesson was decent, but…

four different colored cupcakes with white frosting and cherries

The school year is winding down for me (I only will see each group of students 3 more times) and that time will go quickly. So as the end of the year goes by I try to keep projects as a two day lesson because with end of year field trips, field days, and assemblies there will be several groups that will miss. Here's a Wayne Thiebaud lesson that most students were able to finish in two classes. I did a Theibaud lesson last year with 4th graders and really loved the results as far the variety…

4th Grade Warm or Cool Birch Trees Fourth grade has been working hard on their mixed media birch trees, for the past couple of weeks. Here's how we created ours.... First, they had to choose if they were going to do WARM colors (Red, Orange, & Yellow) or if they were going to use COOL colors (blue, purple, and green). Then, they painted their backgrounds with Prang tempera cakes, on 12x18 pieces of 90lb paper. After they finished painting, they could start on their birch trees. we used half…

art project for children with colorful hand prints

Third grade used warm and cool colors and pattern to create these tempera paintings. The students viewed artwork by native people and how their hand print was not only a record of who they were or where they had traveled, but also a way to sign their art. The students each used their hand prints to sign their paintings. Notice how the warm colors (red, orange, and yellow) advance and the cool colors (blue, green, and violet) recede? This color effect creates an optical illusion. The boys and…
