Ostlegion soldier. Given the man's Asiatic facial features he probably belongs to the Turkistan Legion. His Osttruppen collar tabs and shoulder boards show that he holds the rank of Zugführer (Oberfeldwebel). However the two aluminium braid rings worn on both sleeves just above the cuffs indicate that in addition to his substantive rank he is also a 'Khaupt-Fel'dfebel' (Hauptfeldwebel), i.e. a company sergeant-major, which was an appointment not a rank. "AXIS & LEGION MILITARIA" - Axis & Legion Militaria
Insignia worn by Turkistan Legion and later the 'Ostturkischer Waffen-Verband der SS' (formed October 1944). The all-Muslim Waffen-SS unit was based on the Turkistan Legion, 'Idel-Ural' (Volga Tartars) and 'Crimea' (Tartars) Osttruppen units raised by the Wehrmacht in 1941-43. These were transferred to Waffen-SS control in November 1943.
