Vermeer | Woman Holding a Balance | composition 1
Johannes Vermeer - "Woman Holding a Balance" NGA | Vermeer | Woman Holding a Balance | composition 1
I read this composition as a set of overlapping pyramid shapes. The larger pyramid is pointed downwards, illustrating the weight of the boot heel on the opponent's neck. The smaller pyramid enhances the center of interest & all major leading lines seem to radiate from, or point to the main Gladiator. There's a repeating rectangle pattern throughout. The centered wedge of wall cuts a rounded shape in the dirt, leading the eye left to right. Jean León Gérome - Pollice Verso, 1872

My read on this composition is a Bullseye, with some zig-zags and a well hidden diagonal leading line to assist in the descent of the eye through the painting's atypically narrow, vertical canvas. It reminds me of an exclamation mark. SIR LAWRENCE ALMA TADEMA - THE BENEDICTION
