1865 Wedding gown satin trimmed with tulle, swansdown, crystals and pearls.
An 1855 evening ensemble with an elaborate 7-layer flounced skirt decorated with flowers and stripes. The introduction of the cage crinoline in the 1850s allowed skirts to reach enormous sizes. It also saw a vogue for horizontal stripes which echoed the structure of the new crinolines.
This dress, c 1860, was designed by the first and very famous fashion house, the House of Worth, Founded by an Englishman and former draper, Worth managed to charm the French Empress Eugenie and convinced her to wear his designs.
