Starry Night, Edvard Munch. Painted six years before van Gogh’s famous nocturne, this work depicts the coastline at Åsgårdstrand, a small beach resort south of Oslo in Norway. Munch used dark hues of blue, green and red to convey a sense of mysticism and melancholy, and adopted the white of the canvas to capture the discreet light of the moon behind the clouds. In true Symbolist fashion Munch sought to convey the emotions awakened by the night sky, rather than record its picturesque qualities.

Edvard Munch, Stjernenatt (Starry night), 1922-1924, oil on canvas, 140 x 119 cm, The Munch Museum On 10th August it’s Saint Lawrence here in Italy and this day is also known as the Night of the Shooting Stars. Looking at the sky (if it’s not cloudy!) it’s possible to see falling stars. An old tradition says that every time we see a falling star, we can express a desire and it will come true.
