First Cowboy Hero of Fiction Born in Fredericksburg, Texas, in 1857, William Levi “Buck” Taylor grew up to be the “King of the Cowboys.” He gained notoriety performing cowboy stunts for Buffalo Bill Cody’s Wild West show and became the first cowboy hero of fiction in an 1887 dime novel written by Prentiss Ingraham. ON THIS DATE April 26 1886 William Levi Dawson was born in Albany Georgia. Mr Dawson was voted to Congress (representing Chicago District) as a representative in 1942. In 1949 he became the chairman of the House Committee on Expenditures in Executive Departments (later renamed the Committee on Government Operations), making him first African American representative to chair a committee in Congress.

William Levi Dawson (April 26, 1886 - November 9, 1970) was an African-American politician and lawyer who represented Chicago, Illinois for more than 27 years in the United States House of Representatives. Dawson graduated magna cum laude in 1909 from Fisk University where he joined Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. He moved to Illinois in 1912 to study Northwestern University law school in Evanston.
