I like this idea for adding height and substance to the patio, and for giving open areas boundaries. Doesn't hurt that it uses terra cotta pots (although you can use any) and is therefore not terribly expensive. I think I'd plant water tolerate plants in it as terra cotta gets pretty warm and tends to dry out the soil fast.
