Before the railroads were built, wagons were pushed and pulled by both man and animal along wooden tracks. It wasn’t until the late 1700’s that iron tracks and steam powered engines began to take over. In 1804, a man from Wales built the first successful steam locomotive. The first trains traveled around 15 to 20 mph. Because of the railroads, people began to move to the cities.
