In August and early September 2011, Stromboli's activity was at unusually strong levels. Powerful explosions from the NE vent often sent bombs to more than 500m high, reaching Pizzo and the Bastimento viewing areas (which remained closed most of the time). Stromboli- Italy A very powerful eruption showers the whole crater with bombs, and probably reaches the Pizzo as well. The heavy bombardment results in glowing rockfalls lasting for more than a minute on the Sciara del Fuoco, with many bombs reaching the sea. (Photo: Tom Pfeiffer)
