A rainbow of Penguins: Publisher Allen Lane wanted a logo that was "dignified but flippant," so the penguin brand was born. At sixpence, anyone who loved to read good stories could buy a paperback for the same cost as a pack of cigarettes. Lane's brainchild was born after he had visited Agatha Christie: he stood waiting for a train, realizing there was nothing but magazines and bad novels to choose from.
