Sebastião Ribeiro Salgado nasce l’8 febbraio 1944 ad Aimorés, nello stato di Minas Gerais, in Brasile. A 16 anni si trasferisce nella vicina Vitoria, dove finisce le scuole superiori e intraprende gli studi universitari.  Nel 1967 sposa Lélia Deluiz Wanick. Dopo ulteriori studi a San Paolo, i due si trasferiscono prima a Parigi e quindi a Londra, dove Sebastião lavora come economista per l’Organizzazione Internazionale per il Caffè. They live by hunting for wild pigs, tapirs and monkeys, traveling through the rainforest with 6-foot bows, and by gathering forest produce: babaçu nuts, açaí berries, and honey.
