Mary Tudor, later Mary I, daughter of Catherine of Aragon and Henry VIII. Although pampered and well-loved in childhood, she suffered terribly as a result of her parents' divorce, struggling to stay loyal to her mother when disloyalty to the king was an act of treason. And Anne Boleyn was a cruel and unreasonable stepmother. Mary's adult life was loveless and riddled with disappointment, a sad and dour figure in Tudor history.
