Adding and Subtracting Fractions Using the Four-Square Method
When I first started teaching adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators to my fifth graders, I quickly realized that they needed some concrete step-by-step directions. They also needed a way to organize their work. I racked my brain for a little while before coming up with this graphic organizer. My students love it, and they never confuse the steps again!
Fraction Butterfly Anchor Chart - cross multiply to find equivalent fractions to compare fractions or add & subtract fractions with different denominators. A visual reminder of the strategy for adding & subtracting fractions found in the CCSS 5.NF.A.1 (a/b + c/d = (ad + bc)/bd). See http://www.corestandards.org/Math/Content/5/NF/A/1/. This is not intended to be taught on its own, but can serve as a reminder after the concepts that explain why this works have been taught.
