Notice how the background is different within the "face" and outside of it be it by the colors, by the cut cloud, by the type of terrain, and perhaps this is to give a "face to the face" or a personality to the illusion and maybe the resemblance between them and the tone of the woman's skin suggest it is really her face.  I love the feminine lips made out of mountains and reflections.
