Marble Head Of A Goddess -- Perhaps Aphrodite (Venus). It is thought to be a copy of a chryselephantine (gold & ivory) statue of the Classical Era (5th-4th Centuries BCE). The black colour under the eyes owes to the oxidation of the bronze eyelids, now lost. From Athens, 2nd Century CE -- Until recently in the fabulous Roman Collection of the National Archaeological Museum, from which it was detached. Athens, Acropolis Museum
