Stromboli, Rossellini's first time direction of Ingrid Bergman, met resistance in the United States that was attributed to the scandal of their relationship. However, this bleak picture of a marriage that should not have been, and a woman's resistance to a soul-destroying culture (and its violence toward women) on an isolated Italian island, was not a subject movie-goers wanted. Nor was this a subject anyone had wanted to face until decades later.- Donata Guerra

Europa '51 was poorly received in America at time of release. It is not hard to guess why: the overwhelming Protestant ethos of this nation would not have identified with poor devout Catholics in Southern Italy, nor with one character driven by socialist notions. From our vantage point today, we can conclude that the protagonist was suffering from clinical depression. There was no formal outlet for her to find meaning by serving the less fortunate. Thus, she was outcast.-Donata Guerra
