When Einstein posed for this sketch in 1938, scientists in the US, UK, Fr, & Germ were racing to unlock the secrets of the atom. The next Jan, a German team came upon fission, which could transform uranium into a superbomb. When Einstein- who fled to the US in 1933-learned of the news, he alerted FDR. In 1940, FDR set up the Manhattan Project. Einstein was not asked to join. AE, whose E=mc2 changed the way man understood his universe, was known as a pacifist & Zionist, & thus deemed unreliable.
