The name of this place is a bit misleading, as instead of a lake there are streams and small ponds. However, there was actually a big lake here some century ago, but after decades of floods its bed is now almost completely filled up with debris. Making this plateau as one of the highest swamp in the world I guess. The Pyramides Calcaires are a wonderful mountain formation at the top of the Val Veny in Valle d'Aosta, Italy, and are part of the Monte Bianco range. While on my way up there…

The Valle Stretta is a small, narrow valley in the Western Alps, right at the border between Italy and France. It's certainly one of the best alpine environment I know: evergreen forests, small glacial lakes, rivers and small streams, waterfalls. And, as the ice on the cake, the amazing jagged peak known as Grand Seru, part of the Mount Thabor massif, dominate the valley at his top. I took this picture on a evening of mid October, the period when fall colours in the valley reach their peak.

This is the Orco river near the small village of Ceresole Reale in the Gran Paradiso National Park, Piedmont, Italy. I took this picture in a late afternoon at the beginning of February 2009, while it was snowing. I think it is a fair portrait of the exceptional snowfalls of winter 2009. At the time this picture was taken already three meters of snow had fallen at an altitude of about 1500 m..This is a mosaic of 3 horizontal frames, for a full size image of about25 Mp.

A classic view from below of a bush of maple trees protunding in the blue sky. Taken an evening of mid October in Valle Stretta, a beautiful small valley of the Western Alps in Piedmont, Italy.

This is the Pian del Valasco, an awesome plateau at 1800 meters of elevation in the heart of the Alpi Marittime natural park in Piedmont, Italy. I took this picture about 30 minutes after sunset, while a fast travelling front was approaching from the west. The light show was very impressive, although it only lasted for the time it took me to take 4 verticals of 25" of exposure each. .Everything happened very fast indeed: only 5 minutes earlier there was almost no fog in the valley, and just…

Dark, ominous, stormy clouds above the Gran Paradiso massif photographed from Valnontey, a small valley at the heart of the Gran Paradiso National Park in Aosta Valley, Italy. Rather amazingly it didn't rain, instead the sky broke a few minutes later, flooding the valley with the warm light of the setting sun..Stitched from four vertical frames.

A view of the majestic northeastern portion of the Monte Bianco/Mont Blanc - from Dente del Gigante/Dent du Geant to Les Grandes Jorasses, with the first snow of the seasons and some beautiful fall colours on the larches of the Tete d'Arpy forest. Stitched from four verticals

The sun rose from behind the ridges just a few moments after the shutter closed. This is lake Rosset with the Gran Paradiso range in the background. Lake Rosset lies in the "lakes region", the heart of the Gran Paradiso National Park, the largest and oldest protected area of Italy.
