During the 1960s and 70s, thousands of monuments commemorating the Second World War called ‘Spomeniks’ were built throughout the former Yugoslavia; monumental sculptures with angular geometry echoing the shapes of flowers, crystals, viruses or DNA. Antwerp-based photographer Jan Kempenaers travelled the Balkans photographing these objects.

Estas estruturas foram ordenadas a serem construídas pelo ex-presidente iugoslavo Josip Broz Tito entre 1960 e 70 para comemorar os locais onde ocorreram as batalhas da Segunda Guerra Mundial. Na década de 80, estes monumentos atraíram  milhões de visitantes por ano. Depois de 1990, foram abandonados completamente e seus significados simbólicos foram perdidos para sempre.
