Our "Gold": Garganega Grapes

Garganega is the most important white grape in the provinces of Verona and Vicenza, the variety that dominates the hills of Soave Doc. It has a small asset of aromas as bitter almond and white flowers; it has a very long biological development, so it matures in October and it has a tough and yellow skin (almost red) when it ripes.

"Soave" is the name of the area, and also the characteristic of this land: gentle and sunny hills, in which are embed like precious historical jewels, medieval castles and elegant Venetian villas, surrounded by vineyards and olive trees which have found, since the time of ancient Greeks, a perfect home site.

This distribution in the low hill’s belt let the grapes mature in a ideal climate, healthy and airy, with an high temperature range which allows the grapes to mature to the right grade of sugar. Besides the hilly location allows the vines to enjoy a fresh and dry soil, originated by volcanoes activity, rich in basaltic rocks and clay, which guarantees the health of the plants and the mineral character and flower fragrance which are flair typical of Garganega grapes.

The most suitable zone for the production of our wines are the areas of “Magnavacche”, “Costalta” and “Castellaro”, in which is distributed the estate of the family. This vineyards are located between an average high of 150/180 meters.

In 1933 the wine making history of Tessari has begun. Bothered by an unproductive year due to the insufficient incoming earned from the selling of his grapes to the Soave’s Wine Cooperative, grandpa Antonio decided to start working his own grapes, with effort, sacrifice and aiming to a superior quality. His first fields were 2 “campi veronesi” (6000 square meters) in the hill of “Magnavacche”, which is still one of the 3 parts of the family propriety.

The wines produced in Monteforte’s area, characterized by an East / South-East solar display, express the freshness of the morning sun, and they distinguish themselves by their flower fragrance.

The company’s vineyards, situated in Magnavacche, Costalta and Castellaro hills, fully enjoy the characteristics of this precious and unique soil. On the Magnavacche and Costalta side the soil is darker, with an higher presence of basaltic rocks, on the opposite, the Costalta side, in Brognoligo, is lighter and mostly clay.

The soil, originated by volcanic activities, is composed by basalt and tuff, called “tovo” which, thanks to its structure and micro elements abundance, gives and exalts the typical freshness and mineral character to our wines.
